Our SKIN,
remarkably thin and amazingly complex, is our body’s largest organ.
An adult's skin typically covers 22
square feet and weighs 8-10 pounds.
Our skin shelters us from
the hazards of our environment and yet allows us to experience pain and
pleasure. It works to renew itself every second of every day as we
shed some 40 pounds of dead skin cells in the course of our lifetime. One
square inch of skin is reported to contain approximately 65 hairs, 100
sebaceous glands, 78 yards of nerves, 19 yards of blood vessels, 9,500,000
cells, 1,300 nerve endings, and 650 sweat glands.
Like a sponge, our skin absorbs
chemicals. In fact, today many medicines are given in "patch" form
to be absorbed through the skin. Since our skin cannot discriminate
between synthetic and natural, or between harmful and beneficial, it may
absorb harmful chemicals present is commercial soaps, shampoos, and
lotions.

Discouraged
by the harsh commercial soaps available,
we
began creating our own handmade soaps
with all
natural ingredients.
Our bodies are constantly exposed to synthetic
chemicals in air, water, and food--why
add to the problem by applying synthetic products to your skin and
hair.
The long term
effects of synthetic chemicals on the body are still unknown. Most of the ingredients that are
used to make Ida's Handcrafted Soap can be found in your garden and
kitchen pantry. These all natural nourishing ingredients are
packed with protein, vitamins, and minerals.

Our family had become accustomed to the tight, dry skin that we felt
after every shower with commercial detergent bars. After
hundreds of bottles of lotion to alleviate itchy dry skin,
especially in the winter, we realized there was an alternative.
Ida's Handmade Soap began as a hobby to develop skin-friendly
natural products for our family.
As we shared our soap and shampoo bars with
friends and family, they began to spread the word and our home
business was born. Every recipe
is created with the health of your skin in mind. Our recipes
represent many hours of research as we strive to
bring you the finest products available.
The popularity of natural
handmade soaps is on the rise and with good reason.
It is an
inexpensive, luxurious, healthy, treat you can give yourself every
day. Handmade soaps are not just
for cleansing. They play an important part in natural skin care.
Herbs and essential oils infuse the skin with enriching nutrients.
Homemade soap is truly better.
The commercial "soap" found in grocery store aisles is frequently
not soap at all but a detergent bar made from synthetic materials,
cleansers, stabilizers and animal by-products. These bars contain
processed chemicals and quite often, petroleum-based ingredients,
that are harsh on your skin and strip it of it's natural protective
oils and moisture.
Unlike commercially produced
soaps, handmade soaps do not leave your skin squeaky clean, stripped
of its natural, protective oils. Squeaky clean is for
dishes--not human skin!

Commercial brands are frequently made from tallow (cow fat).
Look for "sodium tallowate" on your label. These animal waste fats must be bleached and deodorized
before used in commercial soaps.

Ida’s Handcrafted Soap is handmade entirely from pure food grade vegetable oils.

Commercially produced soaps frequently use pigments, and dyes that can
cause skin sensitivity.

The colors in
Ida’s Handcrafted Soap come from spices, juices, teas, herbal infused
oils, and other natural ingredients. We
do not use
crayons, dyes, or other synthetic substances.

Commercial soaps
and some handmade soaps use synthetic fragrances, fragrance
oils, which are nothing more than synthetic perfume, and are usually listed under
the generic terms perfume or fragrance.
Synthetic fragrances, preservatives, colorants and other additives can
irritate your skin.

Our soap making process uses only natural ingredients. There are no
artificial colors or fragrances.
Why add artificial
ingredients to a natural product?
Some
of our soaps have no added scent—you’ll love the earthy smell of natural
soap. These soaps have distinct aromas due to honey, grains,
flowers, spices, or herbs. Scented soaps contain pure
plant essential oils from natures
finest botanicals, NOT a synthetic fragrance oil or a natural fragrance copy.

Liquid soaps and face cleansers
are made up mostly water. Personal care products that contain water,
need preservatives to guard against the growth of bacteria and mold.
Many commercial
body and face cleansers contain parabens (methyl-,
ethyl-, propyl-, and butylparaben) as preservatives. Consumers have
been warned about the toxic effects of parabens for quite a while.

Our soaps, shampoos, and lotion bars are not water-based and so there is
no need for all of those preservatives.
|
Commercial
soaps use
surfactants such a Sodium Lauryl
Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, DEA (DEA Lauryl Sulfate), Sodium Laureth
Sulfate, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, and Alpha Olefin Sulfonate. Surfactants
are foam boosting agents that are used by the cosmetics industry to
increase the lather. They are powerful skin irritants.

Our soap making process uses only natural ingredients. We use all natural
coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and castor bean oil to create a bubbly,
fluffy lather.

Commercial
soaps use
synthetic
preservatives, stabilizers, and
antioxidants such as
Tetrasodium EDTA, Trisodium etidronate, and BHT.
All of these synthetic agents are known to cause skin irritation, allergic
or sensitization reactions.

|
Our soap making process uses 100% natural ingredients. Our soaps are
not made to sit for years on store shelves--they DO have a
shelf life. We use natural vitamin E oil,
grapefruit seed extract, rosemary oil extract, and some essential oils as natural
"preservatives."

One of the most dramatic
differences between handmade soap and commercially prepared soap is
the natural glycerin. The
commercial soap making process allows for rapid mass production at the
cost of quality. Commercial soap makers use salt to curdle a batch
of soap in order to separate out the moisturizing glycerin, which is a
natural byproduct of soapmaking. The natural glycerin removed from
the soap is used in moisturizers and other cosmetics where it commands a
higher price. Have
you ever noticed that the same company that sells you the soap that dries
out your skin also sells you the lotion to moisturize your body after your
shower?

Our handmade soaps retain glycerin, which
occurs naturally in the soap making process. Glycerin is a humectant which
means that it helps attract moisture to the skin.

humid weather--because of the natural glycerin.

natural glycerin, you have a soap that dries out the skin.

Some
soap companies use the exact same recipe for every bar of
soap. They simply change the fragrance.

We all know that a lotion that works for one person does not work for
another; or a perfume that smells divine on one person does not have the
same scent when applied to a different person's skin.
Even as
seasons change our skin also changes. Your favorite bar of soap in
the summer may differ from your favorite winter soap. For that reason
nearly every one of our soaps is made from a different recipe.
Sometimes we simply tweak our basic recipe--a bit more of this oil or a
little less of that. We add special oils and butters, natural
ingredients, and skin loving essential oils. Lather, texture, and
the feel on your skin may vary with each soap.
With a wide variety of recipes and essential
oil blends, we are sure you will find a soap just right for you.
