Lavender Ideas

There are numerous recipes in books and on the internet for creating homemade items to soothe the spirit.   Below are a few of our favorites using lavender.  Lavender is known world wide for its wonderful aroma and soothing benefits to the skin and the mind. Using Lavender may help to relieve sleeplessness, headaches, irritability, and depression.

Lavender Facial Steam (using lavender flowers)

Place a handful of dried lavender in a pot of boiling water.  Reduce the heat and simmer covered for 5-10 minutes.  Steam opens the pores while deeply cleansing and rejuvenating the skin.  The lavender will become infused in the water so that its emollient, softening, and moisturizing benefits will reach deep into your pores.

Wash your face and pull your hair back from your face.

Place the pot of steaming lavender water on a table (using a trivet or towel to protect the table).  Get comfortable and make a tent over your head with a towel, and hang your head over the steaming pot. Do not to lean close to the steam or you can scald yourself.

Relax with your face in the steam tent for about 5 minutes.  The scent is aroma-therapeutic, too--relaxing and anti-stress

Rinse your face with cool water and pat dry.

Lavender Tea Hair Rinse (using lavender flowers)

This recipe makes a strong lavender herbal infusion.  Lavender helps condition hair and the aroma is soothing and calming.

Place 2 tablespoons of dried lavender buds into a 1 cup measuring cup.  Pour 1 cup of boiling water over the lavender buds.  Cover and allow to steep until cool.  Strain the buds out, and pour the lavender tea over your hair after shampooing and conditioning. You can leave it in or rinse it out.

Lavender Linen Spritz (using essential oils)

Almost fill a 2 oz. or 4 oz. spray bottle with Everclear*
To this add 36 drops (for 2 oz.) or 72 drops (for 4 oz.) of Lavender Essential Oil.

This spray will freshen sheets and towels in the linen closet (as well as help keep insects out!). Spraying the sheets and pillows of the guest-room bed - or your own, right before climbing in will relax you and help you fall asleep. It's really heavenly!

*Everclear is a brand of pure grain alcohol, available in 190 proof (95%).  Because of its strength it is illegal in many US states.  If Everclear is not sold where you live, plain vodka can be used instead (Everclear is basically a strong form of vodka). Vodka is used because it has no odor to mask the natural scent of the herbs or essential oils.

Lavender Linen Spritz (using lavender flowers)

Fill small glass container with lavender flowers and fill with vodka.  Close the container tightly , place on its side in a sunny windowsill for 2 weeks. You will need to shake and rotate the container 1 or 2 times a day. The alcohol extracts the natural oils from herbs.  Strain the liquid.

If you would like a stronger scent to your spritz, add more lavender flowers to the same bottle and repeat the process.

Linen Spray For Ironing

20 oz Distilled water
1 1/2 oz. 100 proof vodka or grain alcohol*
¼ oz of Lavender essential oil.

Mix the essential oil into the Vodka.  Slowly add the distilled water to the Vodka stirring constantly.  Fill a spray bottle.  Spray a little lavender spritz on your pillow cases when your press them.  This scent will soothe you . It will keep your linen closet smelling fresh too.

*You do need to use the vodka in this recipe--lavender scented water works well.  We have found that the vodka helps to disperse the essential oils in the water.
